No.3 Emerging Technology PDAs

With a world filled with established and newly forming technologies, introducing kids at a younger age to the various types of technologies we possess is vital to the criteria introduced in school. Personal Digital Assistants, also known as a PDAs, are a sufficient and cheaper way to introduce students to various technologies at a younger age. A PDA is essentially a miniature computer or smart phone in your hand (minus the ability to talk and text).
However, these PDAs possess the ability to syncronize with one main computer allowing both teacher and parents to view what has been going on within both the child's learning experience and ability to work with various technologies such as web browsers, podcast and even Microsoft. Not only are these tiny computers easy to store away when not in use, they are also less distracting and more controllable than a typical laptop. PDAs are also a cheap replacement to computer labs and personal computers that so many schools require.
While attending Warren Central High School, I was able to use a PDA provided by the school for four years. Not only was I able to write stories for the newspaper while attending events, I was also able to easily receive messages from teachers on homework assignments as well as create projects via powerpoint and Microsoft that had the ability to upload to a teachers main computer within seconds.  The PDA I was able to use was a Palm Pilot series, which the school received via grant to further education with technological use.
PDA also give that fun, interesting and up-to-date experience that need to start occurring within our educational classrooms. Below I have selected a picture similar to the PDA I was given and a youtube link to the history of the PDA...ENJOY!

Emerging Technology No.2 : Webcast

In my opinion, webcast are the next big thing when it comes to emerging technology within education. In fact, just recently, watching a webcast via YouTube was a required assignment in one of my classes. Webcast are basically a podcast with video. The files can either be delivered live or pre-recorded. In addition too, webcast are becoming a popular trend among media outlets such as the news, radio stations and artistic genres such as literature, music and film production. Not only are they a cheap way to produce a media outlet, they are also convienant to locate, find and use. With hit websites such as YouTube, Metacafe and dailymotion.com, millions of people are able to quickly locate videos on topics they are searching for within seconds.
In my opinion, YouTube is one of the best webcast locations to search for videos. Whether it is looking up the latest videos of music artist, listening to poets recite poetry or advertising cheerleading videos for where I work, the website it extremely helpful and useful for several purposes. Below is a link to one of my favorite motivational speakers Randy Pausch. This video was upload December 20th of 2007, where over 12 million viewers have since watched. It is a rather long video, but I promise it is worth your time!

My Podcast

Blog of Podcasting....

Wow!...I do not think that I have ever had a more intimidating experience than having to talk into a microphone and record a podcast for everyone to hear. At first I had no clue how to create a podcast, but after some quick YouTube examples and reading of instructions, I learned how easy and fun creating one can be.
A podcast is basically recording either audio or video in the form of a downloadable MP3. These files can be helpful for many things including: providing a more personal experience, creating a website where people can listen to your point, for people who hate reading, or even the visually impaired.
For this specific assignment, I used the Audacity technology for basic podcasting needs. This program showed me step by step how to create and record the podcast. I then used the Lame MP3 encoder for Windows to convert my podcast into an MP3 file. Both programs were extremely easy to use and quick to learn how to operate.
If I were to give any tips or advice for creating a podcast they would be to just have fun and relax. Most of us have taken speech; this is like speech behind a curtain. When you relax, you naturally perform better at public speaking. I quickly learned this after my first few attempts to create a podcast. Additionally, have fun with it; I mean the career we are all choosing does require public speaking everyday.

Who am I....and my first blogging experience

Hello everyone,
My name is Emily Brown, and I am a junior here at IUPUI. I am pursuing a path toward secondary English Education, but really want to be a counselor in a middle school or high school setting. I was told by various teachers that becoming a counselor right off the bat is difficult, and my chances of reaching my goal would be better if I taught first. So here I am...third year and half way done!
I have known for a large portion of my life that I wanted to work in a school setting and with children. I love being in school and quickly realized this when I had to drop out last year. During my semester off, I realized how much I truly love learning; I want to inspire kids to feel that same passion. I went to a large high school and had several teachers over four years. However, I can honestly say that from all my teachers, maybe four of them appeared to be teaching because they loved it. I want to be an addition to this high school staff where students can tell I am teaching because I love it.
My first blogging experience went a lot easier than I figured. I have the worse technology luck, and the blogspot website made creating a blog simple and fun. I am not a certified blogger or anything but if I were to give advice it would be just follow directions, and do not get ahead of yourself. It takes two minutes to read the directions which give a great amount of detail on what exactly to do. I really enjoyed this experience and look forward to continuing the process.
